Mill Village Advocates is a grassroots organization encouraging responsible redevelopment for the Slatersville Mill Complex.
Purpose:
As informed residents of North Smithfield, our interest is in seeing the historic Slatersville Mill Complex become an important local destination with a balanced mix of housing, neighborhood services and retail, office commercial, light industry, restaurants, municipal and other appropriate uses in compatible proportion. We recognize the need to expand our economy and tax base in a way that enhances our quality of life and quality of place. Planned properly, this 35-acre site has the potential to build a greater sense of community in North Smithfield and effectively become reconnected once again with the urban fabric of Slatersville, the first planned mill village in the United States. Forward-thinking redevelopment guidelines have the potential to create a synergy of uses in which the whole is greater than the sum of its parts and that offers a social as well as economic benefit to ALL residents of North Smithfield.
We encourage Town Officials to explore all available options for achieving this vision in a collaborative, participatory fashion with the developer. More specifically, we ask our elected leaders to more actively seek – with the help of a hired consultant if necessary – to achieve the goals stated above through the permitting process.
